Japan only 2 albums on 1 CD compilation / In-N-Out Records # DDCI-2016
Hailing from The Netherlands, The Travoltas were a poppunk band, combining the energy and power of punkrock with the melodies and harmonies of classic popbands like the Beach Boys and the Byrds. The band is often reffered to as “the Beach Boys of Punk Rock” or “a cross between the Ramones, the Beach Boys and Weezer”. Their trademark sound is in fact a combination of afore mentioned bands and 80′s powerpop (the Cars, Blondie) adding influences ranging from surf music to new wave. But the Travoltas sound more than straight Beach Boys with distorted guitars, and throw a little Weezer in for good measure… In result is something so unique and catchy, you can’t help but love it. Make no mistake, though, despite the killer vocal harmonies and keyboard work, these guys know how to Rock!
Here’s the Japan only compilation – 2 full length albums on 1 CD – reissue of Travoltas’ 2002s “Endless Summer” & 2003s “Travoltas Party”, so that you can use words like overwhelming, brilliant, awesome, astonishing, etc. But better adding just HITS,HITS,HITS – is all about that.
If The Netherlands seems like an unlikely point of origin for Travoltas — perhaps the world’s finest surf-punk band — it’s important to remember that Beach Boys and Descendents albums are available worldwide. Fusing elements of those influences to a sturdy rock charge, not unlike blink-182, this talented quintet, fronted by Perry Leenhouts, fires off roaring, airwave affable anthems in quick succession. “One for the Road” launches the disc by chronicling van life from tour stop to tour stop amid a powerful guitar attack. “I’m Sorry” puts the group’s most impressive asset — killer three-part harmonies — on display, while “Liv Tyler”, is a sunny ode to a starlet with an undeniable approach akin to pop/punk jokers Nerf Herder. If the title cut sees these Europeans longing to revisit the sandy shores of Southern California through an exhilarating, handclap propelled rocker, “Lori” is a timelessly structured love song with an edge. Anchored by the steadfast kit work of drummer Woody, and in the spirit of the Ramones under the guidance of Phil Spector, Travoltas’ musicianship is damn impressive. Succinctly put, in a perfect world, these lads would be chart-busters.

Dutch power pop band the Travoltas have long had an admiration for the Beach Boys, and it comes to fruition on this clever homage to the Beach Boys Party! album, right down to the facsimile graphics, which mimic the look of the original. The music here, in keeping with its model, is sunny, breezy, acoustic, and a whole lot of fun, with covers of Beach Boys’ hits like “Little Honda”, “Barbara Ann”, and “California Girls” fitting in well with Travoltas’ originals like “Endless Summer”. A cover of the title song from the movie That Thing You Do is a particular delight. Although some fans of the group’s electric side may be disappointed by this release, the casual feel and undeniable warmth of the project make it a welcome addition to the Travoltas’ discography.
